Understanding Your Consumer Rights in the UK

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you important protections when you buy goods from a business in the UK. This includes cars, electronics, clothing, furniture, and most other products.

Your Key Rights for Faulty Goods

  • 30-Day Right to Reject: If goods are faulty, you have 30 days from delivery to reject them for a full refund.
  • Right to Repair or Replacement: After 30 days but within 6 months, you can request a repair or replacement. If this fails, you can then ask for a refund.
  • 6-Year Long-Stop: You have up to 6 years (5 years in Scotland) to make a claim for faulty goods, though proving the fault existed at purchase becomes harder over time.

What Counts as Faulty?

Under consumer law, goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. If they fail any of these tests, they're considered faulty and you have rights.

Different Rules for Different Products

While the core rights are the same, some products have specific considerations:

  • Cars: The 30-day rejection window is particularly important. After this, dealers often push for repairs instead of refunds.
  • Electronics: Manufacturer warranties run alongside your statutory rights but don't replace them.
  • Clothing: You can still reject faulty items even if tags are removed, provided you haven't worn them excessively.
  • Furniture: Delivery delays and damage in transit are common issues covered by these rights.
