Mazda axes MX-30 R-EV after selling just 678 in UK

Mazda has pulled the plug on its MX-30 R-EV range extender across Europe after just two years on sale, Autocar reports. The rotary-engined model managed to sell just 678 examples in the UK during its short lifespan.

The R-EV's axing follows the discontinuation of the pure-electric MX-30 last summer, which had been on sale for five years and sold 1,872 units in the UK. A Mazda spokesperson cited a "combination of reasons" for the cancellation, including "consumer trends" and "production priorities".

The MX-30 faced several challenges that hampered sales, including a limited 124-mile range for the electric version, compromised practicality due to half-sized rear doors, and high pricing at £27,995 for the EV and £32,505 for the R-EV. The model also struggled internationally, with only around 600 examples sold in California before being discontinued there in 2023.

Mazda confirmed the MX-30's removal from the UK lineup is "permanent" and won't be directly replaced. However, the company plans to introduce two new EVs this year - the 6e saloon and CX-6e SUV - both based on cars built by Chinese firm Changan. The brand is also developing its first bespoke electric vehicle, spotted testing recently and due for launch next year.

Despite the MX-30 R-EV's commercial failure, Mazda says it remains committed to rotary range-extender technology, having featured the powertrain in its Iconic SP and Vision X-Coupé concept cars.
