Ingenium timing chain failure

A cold-start rattle is the £2,000 warning. Left alone, one owner’s dealer bill reached £16,000, on an engine that has never been recalled in the UK.

Which Land Rovers and Jaguars have the Ingenium diesel?

Any Land Rover or Jaguar with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, from the first cars in 2015 to builds in early 2020.

Jaguar Land Rover started building the Ingenium diesel near Wolverhampton in 2015. It went into the Jaguar XE that year, replaced the 2.2 diesel in the Discovery Sport and arrived in the Evoque with the 2015 facelift. Every later model with a 2.0 diesel uses the same engine.

Models affected

Only cars with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel. Petrol engines, the older 2.2 diesel and the V6 diesels are not covered here. The 2020 end date comes from Jaguar Land Rover’s own free repair campaign in South Korea. It has not published a cut-off for UK cars.

The badge is the quickest check. On a Land Rover, eD4, TD4 and SD4 on a 2.0 diesel, and later D150, D180 and D240, are all this engine. On a Jaguar it is 20d. If the V5C says 1999cc and diesel, and the car was built from 2015, it is an Ingenium.

What does a stretched timing chain sound like?

A metallic rattle on a cold start that fades within moments. Warning lights and lost power come later.

Specialists who replace these chains every week describe the same sequence. The first stage is the only cheap one.

  1. 1

A metallic rattle from the engine on a cold start, which fades as the oil warms.

  2. 2

The rattle stays after the engine is warm.

  3. 3

The engine warning light or a “restricted performance” message, with fault codes such as P0016 that clear and then come back.

  4. 4

Hard starting, rough running and loss of power.

  5. 5

The chain jumps or snaps and the engine is badly damaged.

Left to here: a rebuilt or replacement engine, £5,500 to £16,000

Autocar’s used buying advice on the Evoque is blunt: if the chain has not been replaced, or there is a rattle, walk away.

Why does the chain stretch?

Diesel gets into the engine oil when the particulate filter cleans itself, and thinned oil wears the chain. Jaguar Land Rover has also blamed a manufacturing fault.

The chain links the crankshaft to the camshafts and sits at the flywheel end of the engine. It relies on clean oil.

To burn soot out of the diesel particulate filter, the engine injects extra fuel. Autocar explains that some of that fuel can seep into the sump and dilute the oil, which then protects the engine less well. Its buying guides warn that low-mileage diesels are the most exposed, because short trips cut the cleaning cycle short.

When launched, these engines were on a 21,000-mile service schedule, so diluted oil could stay in the engine for a long time. The specialists also point to the early chain and its guides.

Jaguar Land Rover’s Korean arm gives a different cause. Its notice to owners says the chain stretches because of a defect in the manufacturing process.

How much does it cost to fix?

About £1,800 to £3,000 for a new chain at an independent specialist. From £5,500 to £16,000 if the engine has gone.

Independent specialists publish fixed prices for the chain, guides and tensioner. Kovac Services in Halesowen quotes £1,799 for Jaguars and £1,999 for Land Rovers. K Motors in Lancashire quotes £1,995 including VAT. Turners Garage in Hemel Hempstead and Star Garage in Mansfield both quote about £2,500 plus VAT.

A snapped chain is a different bill. JLR Engines, a rebuilder in Essex, puts a specialist rebuild at £5,500 to £7,500 and a main dealer replacement at £9,000 to £13,000 or more. In one Ombudsman case the owner of a 2018 Discovery Sport faced a main dealer bill of around £16,000.

What has Jaguar Land Rover said?

There is no UK recall. In South Korea, Jaguar Land Rover replaces the chain free of charge.

The DVSA’s records for these models show no recall for the timing chain. A 2019 recall of about 44,500 UK cars with 2.0-litre engines was about CO2 emissions.

South Korea is the contrast. Korean press reported a recall of early Discovery Sports and Evoques in December 2021, after owners’ reports to the transport ministry. Since November 2024, Jaguar Land Rover Korea has run a free repair campaign that replaces the chain, guides and tensioner on nine Jaguar and Land Rover models built up to early 2020. It runs until 2033 or 240,000km, and owners who had already paid for the repair are told to contact Jaguar Land Rover Korea about their costs.

In the UK, help has been case by case. In the £16,000 case, the dealer told the owner the manufacturer was willing to pay part of the bill.

Separately, the High Court made a group litigation order in November 2024 for about 39,000 owners who say the diesel particulate filters on these cars are defective. The court stressed that the order says nothing about the merits. Jaguar Land Rover has not admitted the allegations, and said in 2023 that it would vigorously contest any such claim and that its products “are of the highest quality”.

Who pays for an Ingenium timing chain failure?

Jaguar Land Rover sometimes pays part. The dealer who sold the car is responsible in law, and so is the lender if it is on finance.

Jaguar Land Rover

No UK recall. In one published Ombudsman case the dealer said the manufacturer had offered to pay part of an engine bill of about £16,000. In South Korea it replaces the chain free on cars built up to early 2020. Here, any help is decided case by case.

The dealer who sold it

Responsible in law for the car being of satisfactory quality when sold, and that includes how long a part like a timing chain should last.

The finance company

On hire purchase or PCP the lender supplied the car and carries the same responsibility as a dealer. Both published Ombudsman decisions on these chains were against Land Rover Financial Services.

Your warranty

On a car of this age the manufacturer’s warranty has usually run out. In the published £16,000 case, no warranty on the car covered the failure. A used-car policy pays only what its wording says, so read the lines on timing chains and on damage that follows from one.

Goodwill from the manufacturer and your rights against the seller are separate. Asking for one does not give up the other.

Is the timing chain covered under warranty?

Usually not by the time it fails. That does not settle what the dealer owes you.

The failures in the published decisions came at around five years old, at 52,000 and 55,000 miles. In the Discovery Sport case, no warranty on the car covered it.

If you have a used-car warranty, read what it says about timing chains and about damage that follows from a failed part. A refusal under the policy is a decision about the policy. Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 sit with the dealer, or with the finance company, and are separate.

Can you hand the car back?

It depends on how long ago you took the car. The Act sets three windows, each with its own rules.

First 30 days

Short-term right to reject

Your strongest right. Reject outright and demand a full refund with no deduction. The dealer cannot insist on repairing it first, and the refund is due within 14 days.

30 days – 6 months

One repair, then reject

Allow one repair or replacement. If it fails (or they refuse), you gain the final right to reject. The fault is presumed present at purchase, so the burden is on the dealer.

6 months – 6 years

Rights continue — you prove it

You must show the fault was present or developing at sale, usually via an independent inspection. Claims run up to 6 years in England & Wales (5 in Scotland).

What has the Ombudsman decided?

Two published decisions went the owner’s way. Both turned on durability, and neither accepted a late service as the cause.

In 2022 (DRN-3424038), a car supplied through Land Rover Financial Services snapped its chain at about 55,000 miles, 26 months after the buyer took it. The lender blamed a service four months overdue. The ombudsman found the chain was not durable, so the car was not of satisfactory quality when supplied, and told the lender to take it back.

In 2024 (DRN-4769510), a 2018 Discovery Sport 2.0 diesel snapped its chain at 52,000 miles, more than two years after supply. The lender argued the fault was not there on day one. The ombudsman said it had asked the wrong question: the failure could be the result of a lack of durability that was there from the start. The lender offered no other cause, and the complaint was upheld.

These are two cases on their own facts, not a rule. In both, the garage’s diagnosis and the service record were in front of the ombudsman.

What should you do now?

Act on the rattle, get the diagnosis in writing, and pull together the full service record.

  1. If it rattles on a cold start, book it in with a Land Rover or Jaguar specialist now. Ask them to check the chain for stretch and to read any stored codes.
  2. Get the finding in writing, with the date and mileage. If the chain has snapped, ask the garage to state that the engine damage followed from it.
  3. Gather every service record, including those from before you owned the car. Both Ombudsman decisions looked closely at dates and mileages.
  4. Ask the dealer whether Jaguar Land Rover will contribute, and get the answer in writing. An offer of goodwill does not change who is responsible.
  5. Check your purchase date against the three windows above, then put your position in writing to the dealer, and to the finance company if the car is on hire purchase or PCP. An independent inspection helps if the cause is disputed.

Questions people ask

No. The DVSA’s recall records for the Discovery Sport, Evoque, XE and F-Pace from 2016 to 2019 show no recall for the timing chain. Jaguar Land Rover runs a free chain replacement campaign in South Korea, but it applies to cars sold there.

In one Ombudsman decision the finance company itself said industry guidance was that a timing chain should last the life of the engine if the car is maintained. The ombudsman put a chain’s general lifespan at around 100,000 miles and treated a failure at 55,000 as premature.

Not necessarily. In one published decision a service four months overdue, on a car still inside its mileage interval, was not accepted as the cause. In another, the dealer itself said a late first service would not have caused the failure. Each case turns on its own records.

No. The High Court group action is about diesel particulate filters, with oil dilution and engine wear among the things alleged. Jaguar Land Rover has said it would contest such a claim. It is separate from your rights against the dealer or finance company, and Leigh Day has stopped taking new clients for it.

Autocar says changing the oil more often lessens the chance of dilution damage, and specialists who replace these chains advise roughly 10,000-mile changes. It lowers the risk. It does not put right a chain that has already stretched.
